The Full Story

Cinematographer and Director James Winters was a child of artists in the Los Angeles scene of the 70’s. He developed his aesthetic while running through downtown art galleries and warehouses. As a painting major at Otis Parsons and the Pacific Northwest College of art in Portland, OR, he brought those experiences onto the canvas and ultimately to his work as a filmmaker. James began his production journey working at Portland’s iconic Will Vinton Productions (precursor to Laika) on stop-motion animation and then into the world of live action productions from Hollywood to Seattle. This technical experience led to the world of education and he helped to build the digital media program at Self Enhancement Inc., a thriving youth center dedicated to providing underserved communities with tools and opportunities. He taught on the college level in Seattle, but his passion has always been on set. As a cinematographer and director his work has been seen millions of times on the big screen, online and at film festivals from Berlin to Brazil. Recently, the short Film Retch was the recipient of Best Film at the Seattle Black Film Festival. Other notable projects include the 70’s themed adventure film They Reach, the short film Crazy Cat Lady (featured in the apocalyptic anthology Impact 50), music videos for Sir Mix-a-Lot, SYML, Smokey Brights and commercial content for The BBC, Discovery +, Microsoft, Amazon and Sana Biotech. His company Wintersfilm LLC provides production services including Aerial cinematography, 4K video, lighting and post-production services. Recent continuing ed includes the ASC Masterclass in Hollywood.
